Tony and Josh
Craig Stewart has over 25 years of experience in all aspects of racing gained from the ground floor up. He has designed, built, and maintained a variety of championship off-road vehicles. He has logged thousands of miles both driving and co-driving. Craig has built a solid reputation in the off-road community for being honest, hardworking, and reliable.

Craig’s career began at the age of fifteen when he went to work for his mentor off-road racing legend Johnny Johnson. He started off by prepping Mark Steele’s 5-1600 car. They won nearly every race! Then came Max Razo’s Class 5 Jimco, which Craig prepped and co-drove through two championship seasons. Not bad for a teenager. He went on to help build and maintain several Class 7-S and 7-4X4 trucks for the likes of Mike Leslie, Simon & Simon, and John Johnson. All of which won countless races and many championships. A large assortment of pre-runners and buggies followed, including John’s Chevy S-10, which was a state of the art pre-runner in its day.

In 1991, Craig began working for Unique Metal Products in Santee, CA. There he honed his fabrication skills. Soon he became one of the most requested employees by customers for work on their buggies and other “toys”. Don Primm, owner of Unique Metal Products at that time, decided to make use of Craig’s skills in building and maintaining off-road vehicles by taking on Andataco Motorsports (owned by Dave Sykes) as a customer. Craig built and maintained two championship Ford Stone Stocks for Andataco in 1993 & 1994.

It was in 1995 that Craig and his wife, Sherrie, decided it was time to take the plunge and open their own shop, Stewart’s Race Works. There has not been a moment of rest since. For the first two years Raceworks was in business Craig and Sherrie simultaneously managed Stewart & Stewart Racing Development. Owned by Craig’s parents, Ivan and Linda Stewart, the company manufactures Protrucks, a unique class of off-road spec trucks. It was during that time that extensive research and development was performed by Craig to improve the durability and performance of the trucks. Sales of the trucks greatly increased directly because of this. With over fifty Protrucks now, they have gone on to become one of the largest and most competitive classes in off-road racing. Meanwhile, Raceworks has gone on to become one of the most successful race shops in the off-road industry.

Raceworks currently employs some of the finest mechanics and fabricators in the industry. We have a strong appreciation for our employees. We treat them with the same respect and gratitude we once expected as employees ourselves. Also on the premises are Larry Storck and his crew. A former founder of Unique Metal Products, Larry is one of the most sought after aluminum fabricators in the industry. Larry is responsible for the majority of the aluminum work on our vehicles.

When it comes to working with our customers, Craig is known for being a straight shooter. Whether it’s about completion time, costs, or product performance - we won’t make promises we can’t keep. That’s one of the reasons we have built such an extensive customer base. A common phrase we hear from our customers is “I trust you”. It’s a good feeling to hear that, because we do strive so hard to build genuine relationships with our customers.

We have built and prepped a variety of racecars over the years. Several Class 1 buggies, Protrucks, trophy trucks, and even rally trucks. But somehow along the way, we have become most known for our luxury prerunners.

We are always proud of everything that leaves our shop. We won’t take on a project unless the customer has the necessary funds, as well as the patience, to do the job right. Others may be able to do it cheaper, but never better. You truly do get what you pay for in this sport. And we do everything in our power to make our customers feel like their money has been well spent.
